LAURA NEN
"For me, choreographing with rigid, fixed structures—tightly binding movement to specific counts or spatial patterns—feels utterly absurd in the times we live in. These are times of constant, rapid change—a century shaped by disorientation and the displacement of both our emotions and physical realities. Choreography, to me, should reflect this reality in its structure. That is why I research choreography as a thinking, organic, multidirectional, and ever-changing assemblage—shifting in response to change, settling when no forces propel it, and moving toward new terrains when fresh impulses arise." - Laura thinking while commuting
Laura Jantunen is a choreographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Vantaa, Finland. She has worked as a choreographer, dancer, video maker, and textile artist since completing her vocational qualification in dance in 2011 at the Outokumpu Dance Education. She finished her Master's degree in Choreography from the University of the Arts Helsinki in June 2023.
At the moment, Jantunen is working on two series: The Idiot Gardener, performed in various gardens, and Four Seasons. She is also in the pre-planning phase for a group work that explores the theme of dis/orientation, as well as a solo piece that serves as an imaginary portrait of the last human being. Through these projects, she continues to develop her movement practice, Somagics.
At the heart of her work is always the human being as a sensory creature and part of nature. In her performances, she focuses on corporeal events that often remain in the shadows, such as moments of disorientation, the strange occurrences of everyday life, and the body's ability to archive its experiences. Her choreographic guideline is: "Dance contains everything."
